Manual hand-crank awning extended over a Coventry patio, fitted by Coventry Blinds

Manual Awnings Coventry

Manual awnings are the no-nonsense option in the awning range. No motor, no wiring, no smart-home integration to forget the password for — just a smooth hand-crank mechanism that extends and retracts the awning in seconds. They are quietly reliable, easy to maintain, and a good chunk cheaper than the electric versions.

At Coventry Blinds we have been supplying and fitting hand-operated awnings across Coventry and Warwickshire since 2007. Every awning is made to measure to your patio, terrace or garden, and fitted by our own family-run team from our workshop on Endemere Road.

Why Choose a Manual Awning?

  • Lower initial cost — no motor, no electrical install, no sensors. The price drops accordingly.
  • Simple and reliable — fewer moving parts means less to maintain and less to go wrong over the years.
  • No power dependency — works regardless of what your electricity supply is doing. Useful if a power cut and a heatwave decide to coincide.
  • Same quality engineering — the arms, frame and fabric are all the same high-grade kit we use on the electric versions.
  • Made to measure — sized precisely for your patio, decking or terrace.
  • Free home survey — we come out across Coventry and Warwickshire at no cost or obligation.

Manual vs Electric Awnings

The right call depends on how you actually use the garden. If you head outside whenever the sun’s out and want one-touch convenience (especially if you’re partial to a weekend in the garden with the family), an electric awning earns its premium. If you want a properly engineered awning at a friendlier price, with a turn-of-the-handle action that’ll still be working flawlessly in fifteen years, manual is the smarter choice. Both versions use the same arms, fabrics and durable mechanisms — only the operation differs.

Installation Across Coventry and Warwickshire

Our team comes to your home, measures the space, recommends a sensible size and projection, and fits the awning securely into the wall. We test the operation (and check you’re comfortable using the crank), adjust the angle, and run through care guidance before we leave. Brick, render, timber — we assess the wall first and use fixings that will hold long-term.

Manual Awnings — Common Questions

How does a manual awning work?

A manual awning extends and retracts using a smooth hand-crank mechanism. You insert the crank handle, turn it in one direction to extend the awning, the other to bring it back. The mechanism is geared so it takes very little effort — most customers find it noticeably easier than they expected.

Are manual awnings cheaper than electric?

Yes, significantly. There’s no motor, no electrical install, no wiring back to your fuse board, and no smart sensors. That removes a meaningful chunk from the upfront cost and means there’s genuinely less to go wrong over the awning’s lifetime.

Will I be able to operate a manual awning easily?

Yes, in almost every case. The hand-crank mechanism is geared for low effort and works smoothly even on wide awnings. If you’d genuinely struggle with the cranking action (limited mobility, for example), we’d steer you towards an electric model during the free survey.

Can I upgrade a manual awning to electric later?

Sometimes, depending on the model. Some manual awnings are designed to accept a retrofitted motor; others aren’t. We’ll be honest at the survey about which option is best long-term given how you actually plan to use the awning.
