Tier-on-Tier Plantation Shutters in Coventry

Tier-on-tier shutters are two independent sets of shutters mounted one above the other, hinged separately so the top and bottom panels open completely independently. Open the top for daylight, leave the bottom shut for privacy, or open the whole window when you fancy a breeze. It is the most flexible style of shutter we fit, and the one we end up recommending most for street-facing Victorian and Edwardian properties.

They look particularly good on tall sash windows — the kind you see across the Earlsdon terraces, Leamington spa town, Kenilworth’s older streets and just about every period property in Warwickshire. The horizontal divide echoes the lines of the original sash, so the finished installation looks like it has always been part of the house.

At Coventry Blinds we have been making and fitting tier-on-tier shutters across Coventry and Warwickshire since 2007. Every panel is built to your exact window in our workshop on Endemere Road and fitted by our own family-run team. No standard sizes, no third-party fitters.

Why Choose Tier on Tier Plantation Shutters?

Tier-on-tier is the most versatile style we make. Here is what you get:

  • Total independent control — top and bottom panels operate as two separate shutters, so you can mix any combination of open and closed.
  • Perfect for street-facing rooms — light in from the top, complete privacy at the bottom, no curtains required.
  • Built for tall windows — Georgian and Victorian sashes look like they were designed for tier-on-tier (because they basically were).
  • Full privacy on demand — close both tiers and the room is completely private, day or night.
  • Style without compromise — suits period properties beautifully but works just as well on contemporary new-builds.
  • Made to measure — every panel is built to your exact window. No gaps, no off-the-shelf approximations.

The only catch (and it is a small one): the horizontal mid-rail does break the line of the window slightly. For most windows that’s a feature rather than a bug, but on shorter windows full-height shutters with a louvre-only mid-rail might suit better. We’ll talk it through during the survey.

Our Survey and Fitting Process

Three steps and the room is properly finished:

  1. Free home survey. One of our specialists comes to you, measures each window precisely with a laser, and brings the full range of materials, finishes and louvre sizes so you can compare them in the actual light of the actual room.
  2. Bespoke build. Your panels are made in our Coventry workshop to your exact dimensions, in your chosen material and colour. Hardwood, painted hardwood or waterproof composite — we’ll recommend the right one for the room.
  3. Careful installation. Our own fitters set the frames, hang both tiers, test every hinge and louvre, and tidy up before they leave. Usually done in a morning per room.

Tier-on-Tier Shutters — Common Questions

What are tier-on-tier shutters?

Tier-on-tier shutters are two independent sets of shutter panels mounted one above the other on the same window. The top and bottom panels open completely independently, so you can open the top for light while keeping the bottom closed for privacy.

Are tier-on-tier shutters good for Victorian sash windows?

Yes — tier-on-tier was almost designed for them. The horizontal mid-rail aligns naturally with the meeting rail of a sash window, so the finished installation looks like part of the original architecture. We fit a lot of these around the Earlsdon, Stoke Park and Leamington terraces.

What is the difference between tier-on-tier and full height with a mid-rail?

Full height with a mid-rail uses one continuous panel where the top and bottom louvres tilt independently — the panel itself opens as one piece. Tier-on-tier uses two genuinely separate panels that hinge independently, so you can swing the top open while leaving the bottom shut. Tier-on-tier is more flexible; full height with mid-rail looks slightly cleaner.

How much do tier-on-tier shutters cost in Coventry?

Tier-on-tier shutters are typically 10-20% more than equivalent full-height shutters because there are more components and tighter fitting tolerances. We provide a fully itemised, written quote after your free home survey — with no obligation.
